Audacity Features
Transitional Software
Audacity is a program in transition. This means that the software is constantly being upgraded with new features and ideas. This software is a growing creation of many talented software engineers with a head and ear for sounds and sound recordings. This means that the software is only going to continue to grow and get better. You can not only grow with the software, you can interact with the developers by making suggestions. This is a program that you can actually help design in features you would like to see in recording software.
Customizable
Audacity is 'open source' software which means, if you have a knack for coding, you can fully customize your version to what you would like in your audio recording studio software. Most programs do not allow access to the source code itself and specifically forbid the tampering with it in the license agreement. Audacity leaves the source code open and available and gives you free license to change it as you wish. If you create changes you believe would be beneficial to everyone, you can even suggest your changes to the developers.
Cross Platform Software
Audacity is designed to work not only on Windows, but also on Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux. The fact that this program will run on a wide variety of systems means that it will likely work on your system too. The developers of Audacity are always on a constant look out for ways to make their program even better. If you have a platform it doesn't work on, you can suggest the platform to them. If you are a developer, it may be possible to work with them in order to upgrade the program to work on the platform of your choice. Because this program is transitional, it contains infinite possibilities for features and upgrades.
Multi-faceted recording capabilities
Audacity can record from the traditional microphone, but it can also record from line inputs or other sources including mixers. This program has the capability of dubbing over existing tracts which allows the user to create multi-track recordings. This program is capable of recording up to sixteen channels at once (with the use of multi channel hardware). Level meters are capable of monitoring volume levels before, during and after the recording session. You can also import sounds and combine them with other sounds, including your live recordings.
Easy Editing Tools
Audacity makes it easy to edit with cut, copy, paste and delete functions. The unlimited undo and redo functions let you go backwards or forwards in your editing process. This allows you to change any mistake you made at any step of your progress. Audacity responds very quickly to editing commands, even on the largest of files. This program is capable of editing and mixing an unlimited number of tracks. You even have a drawing tool that allows you to alter individual sample points. The envelope tool allows you to fade the volume up or down in smooth increments, allowing for clean transitions.
